Castor oil has one of the longest documented histories of any plant oil, with references stretching back to Ancient Egypt, where it was used in lamps and early skin care. The “black” roasted version has its own distinct tradition, developed in Jamaica, where the roasting process (which darkens the oil and deepens its character) has long been credited with producing an especially potent oil for hair and scalp care.
